Patagonia Fishing & Waders
Patagonia fishing at The Sporting Lodge, an official UK stockist. Swiftcurrent chest waders are the backbone of it — the Ultralight for packing light and walking far, the Expedition for cold water and hard use, with extended sizes in the Expedition. Swiftcurrent wading jackets sit over the top. Foot Tractor and Forra boots handle the riverbed, and Guidewater slings, Stealth packs and the wading staff cover what you carry.

About Patagonia Fishing & Waders
Materials and construction
Waders use multi-layer nylon with a waterproof breathable membrane designed to be repaired when punctured rather than replaced. Fishing jackets use recycled polyester shells with sealed seams. Vests and packs use hard-wearing nylon built to handle hooks, flies and wet conditions season after season, and the waterproof bags and gloves shield electronics, tackle and hands when conditions turn harsh.
What to Wear for a Day's Fishing
UK river and stillwater conditions change quickly. Here is a practical kit list using the Patagonia fishing range, organised from skin outward.
Base Layer
Start with a moisture-wicking base layer. Capilene midweight works well in cooler months, while Capilene Cool suits warmer conditions. Avoid cotton — it holds moisture against the skin and takes a long time to dry, which makes you cold fast.
Midlayer
A lightweight fleece adds warmth without restricting casting movement. The R1 is a strong choice for active wading because it manages moisture well. On colder days, a Nano Puff vest or jacket provides insulation while keeping your arms free and unhindered for casting.
Waders
Swiftcurrent chest waders are the backbone of the Patagonia fishing range. The Ultralight packs down small and suits walking a long beat in warmer months; the Expedition is the heavier, more durable build for cold water and hard use, and comes in extended sizes. Both use the H2No Performance Standard for full waterproofing with breathable comfort over long sessions. Getting the right size is important — a poor fit creates friction points that wear through the membrane over time. Use the Patagonia Wader Sizing Guide to find the correct chest, inseam and foot measurements.
Wading Boots
Stockingfoot waders need boots, and the sole is the decision that matters. Felt grips smooth wet rock better than anything else, but it holds water, dries slowly, and is restricted at some fisheries on biosecurity grounds — worth checking before you travel. Sticky rubber walks in better, is safer on the bank and dries far quicker. The Foot Tractor comes in both, plus an aluminium bar version that bites into slick bedrock where rubber alone slides. The Forra is the lighter and more flexible option, and the River Salt is built for saltwater. Size up to allow for the neoprene bootie on your waders, and a pair of Yulex wading socks underneath.
Outer Layer
A fishing-specific waterproof jacket sits over the top of your waders. Patagonia's fishing jackets feature higher hand-warmer pockets (positioned above the wader chest line), shorter front hems to reduce drag in the water, and reach-through chest pockets for fly boxes. These details make a noticeable difference compared to a standard waterproof shell.
Accessories
A sun-protective hat or cap is useful year-round, and a sun mask covers the gap at the neck on bright days. Fingerless gloves or fishing-specific gloves keep your hands workable in cold conditions. For carrying, the Guidewater sling and hip packs are the waterproof options, while the Stealth packs and pack vests keep fly boxes, tippet, leaders and tools accessible without returning to the bank. A wading staff is worth having on any river where you cannot see the bottom — a third point of contact changes what you can safely cross — and a wading belt is a safety item rather than an optional one.
Care
Rinse all gear with fresh water after each session, especially after saltwater use. For detailed wader maintenance, see our guide: How to Care for Your Patagonia Waders.
Patagonia Fishing FAQs
Swiftcurrent chest waders in two builds. The Ultralight is the packable summer option, light enough to walk a long beat in. The Expedition is the heavier, more durable build for cold water and hard use, and is available in extended sizes. Both come in a range of leg lengths and foot sizes, including medium-long leg options, to suit different body types.
Patagonia waders are sized by chest, inseam and foot measurement. Our Patagonia Wader Sizing Guide provides full measurement tables. Getting the right fit reduces internal wear and extends the life of the breathable membrane.
Felt gives the best grip on smooth wet rock and is the traditional choice for rivers, but it retains water, dries slowly and is restricted at some fisheries for biosecurity reasons. Sticky rubber is better for walking in, safer on the bank and dries far quicker. Aluminium bars add bite on slick bedrock where rubber alone slides. The Foot Tractor is available in all three, the Forra is lighter and more flexible, and the River Salt is built for saltwater use.
Patagonia fishing jackets include angling-specific features such as reach-through chest pockets, fly-patch attachments, higher hand-warmer placements for use over waders, and shorter front hems to prevent drag in the water.
Yes. The Swiftcurrent range uses Patagonia's H2No Performance Standard, combining full waterproofing with breathable fabric to manage moisture from the inside while keeping river water out.
Guidewater slings and hip packs, Stealth packs and pack vests, wading staffs, wading belts and Yulex wading socks, plus sun-protective hats, caps and sun masks, fishing gloves, and Black Hole cubes and roll-top packs for keeping tackle and electronics dry.
