Filson at The Sporting Lodge, an official UK stockist. Founded in Seattle in 1897 to outfit prospectors heading north to the Klondike, Filson built its name on waxed Tin Cloth, Mackinaw wool and Rugged Twill — materials chosen to survive rather than to look new. Filson jackets and bags are the backbone of the range, with shirts, clothing and accessories alongside. Most of it is made to be repaired rather than replaced.
Clinton C. Filson opened in Seattle in 1897, outfitting prospectors heading north for the Klondike gold rush — people who could not afford kit that failed. That brief shaped everything since. The company still makes a number of its heritage styles in the United States, and the rest through long-standing partners, and it still builds to a standard that assumes the garment will be mended rather than binned. The marketing line is "might as well have the best", which is unusually literal for a slogan.
What the Filson range covers
Outerwear is the heart of it — Filson jackets run from waxed Cruisers to Mackinaw wool coats. Filson shirts cover flannel, oxford and the Alaskan Guide range, and Filson clothing takes in trousers, shorts, knitwear and tees. Filson bags are the other half of the business, built in Rugged Twill and Tin Cloth, from briefcases and totes to duffles and backpacks. Filson accessories covers caps, belts, wallets and the dog gear.
Buying Filson in the UK
Filson is an American brand and sizing follows American conventions, but it is not uniform across the range. The traditional workwear cuts run boxy and roomy, built for layering; some of the newer and lined styles sit closer to true to size. Worth checking the guide on the product page rather than carrying an assumption over from a previous purchase. As an official UK stockist we hold stock here rather than drop-shipping from the States, which means no import duty and no three-week wait. Prices are in sterling and returns are domestic. If you are weighing a jacket against a cheaper alternative, the thing to compare is not the purchase price but how many years it stays in use.
Filson FAQs
Yes. The Sporting Lodge is an official UK stockist, holding Filson clothing, bags and accessories in stock here. That means sterling pricing, no import duty on arrival and UK returns, rather than ordering from the United States and waiting.
Some of them. A number of heritage styles, particularly Tin Cloth and Mackinaw wool pieces, are still made in Seattle, and the rest are produced by long-standing partners abroad. Individual product pages state where each item is made.
Tin Cloth is densely woven cotton with a wax finish: it sheds rain, resists abrasion and stiffens in cold before softening with wear. Mackinaw is heavyweight wool: it insulates even when damp and breathes rather than trapping sweat. Tin Cloth for wet and rough, Mackinaw for cold. Rugged Twill is the third, used mainly in bags for structure.
It varies by style, so it is worth checking rather than assuming. The traditional workwear pieces, including Mackinaw Cruisers, wool vests and the classic work jackets, are cut boxy and roomy, built to go over heavy layers, and most people size down in them. Other styles, including the Tin Cloth Short Lined Cruiser and some collaboration pieces, run true to size or slightly snug. Each product page carries its own size guide.
Occasionally, and not deeply. Filson discounts far less often than most outdoor brands, so reductions tend to be end-of-line rather than seasonal. When there are reduced items they appear in our sale section.
Decades, if it is looked after, which mostly means rewaxing Tin Cloth when water stops beading, and brushing and airing wool rather than washing it. The design assumption is repair, not replacement, and the materials reward that. It is the argument for the price.
