Filson Bags & Backpacks

Filson bags at The Sporting Lodge, an official UK stockist. Rugged Twill and Tin Cloth duffles are the core of the range — waxed or twilled cotton with leather trim, made to be repaired rather than replaced. Dryden and Surveyor backpacks cover daily carry, with the Journeyman at the heavier end. Totes, briefcases and roll-top dry bags fill in around them. Sizes run from a 25L daypack up to the 50L Scout duffle.

About Filson Bags & Backpacks

Filson duffle bags

The duffles split by fabric. Rugged Twill is the dense cotton canvas with leather trim — the Medium and the XS Compact are where most people start, and they soften with use without losing shape. Tin Cloth is the waxed version, stiffer and more water-resistant, which suits being thrown into the back of a vehicle. The Scout 50L and the 48-hour duffles are the travel sizes, while the small Tin Cloth duffle works as a weekend bag. Dry duffles use a welded roll-top instead of a zip, so nothing gets in.

Filson backpacks and travel packs

The Surveyor comes in 25L and 36L, in rugged twill with padded straps — closer to a daypack than a hiking sack. The Journeyman is the bigger and more structured option, and the Drawstring Backpack the simplest. Dryden travel packs are the lightweight nylon end, sized for a change of clothes rather than a full load. None of these are hiking packs with frames and hip belts; they are built for commuting, travel and field use, where abrasion matters more than weight.

Briefcases, totes and dry bags

The Original and Dryden briefcases take a laptop and papers with room left for a flask; the Tin Cloth Compact Briefcase is the waxed and smaller one. Totes run from the plain Tote Bag Without Zipper through zipped and Tin Cloth versions, and earn their place in the back of a car as readily as on a shop run. Dry bags and roll-top totes are properly waterproof rather than water-resistant, which counts on a boat or a riverbank in a way no waxed bag will match.
