Patagonia Clothing & Outdoor Gear

Patagonia at The Sporting Lodge, an official UK stockist. Fleece is where most people start — the Synchilla Snap-T, the Better Sweater and the R1 range run from a light layer to proper winter warmth. Torrentshell rain jackets and Nano Puff insulation handle the weather. The fishing side covers Swiftcurrent waders and wading jackets, and Black Hole bags carry the lot.

About Patagonia Clothing & Outdoor Gear

Patagonia fleece

Fleece is the biggest part of the range and the easiest place to start. The Synchilla Snap-T is the original, a thick pile pullover with a short placket, unchanged in shape for decades. The Better Sweater looks like a knit from the outside and fleece on the inside, which is why it works in an office as readily as on a hillside. R1 is the thinner gridded layer built to go under a shell without bulk, and Micro D is the lightest of the lot. Retro-X and Retro Pile are the deep-pile ones, for standing still in the cold.

Patagonia jackets and waterproofs

The Torrentshell 3L is the rain jacket most people buy, a three-layer waterproof shell that packs into its own pocket. Above it sit the Triolet and the Granite Crest for harder weather. For cold rather than wet, Nano Puff and Down Sweater are the two insulation lines: Nano Puff uses synthetic fill that keeps working when damp, while Down Sweater is warmer for its weight but wants to stay dry. The Houdini is a packable windshell, not a waterproof, and gets mistaken for one.

Patagonia fishing gear and waders

The fishing range is built around the Swiftcurrent waders, running from the Ultralight through the Traverse wading pants to the Expedition, with zip-front and extended sizes in the heavier models. Swiftcurrent wading jackets cover the top half. Foot Tractor and Forra boots handle the footing, and the Foot Tractor comes in felt, sticky rubber and aluminium bar soles, which matters more on a slippery riverbed than anything else in the kit. Guidewater slings and hip packs carry flies and tippet.
