Malibu Sandals - Women's Woven Huarache Sandals

Malibu Sandals was founded by Kevin O'Neill in Malibu, California, and takes its design from the huarache — the hand-woven sandal made in Mexico for centuries. The connection came through surfing: in the late 1950s Californian surfers travelled south to Baja Mexico to escape the crowded breaks at home, met the indigenous communities making these sandals, and brought them back. Huaraches have been called surfer sandals ever since.

Canyon and Colony

The Canyon was introduced in 2015 and is the style the brand is best known for. It is closed at the toe with a woven vegan leather upper and an adjustable back strap, so it holds the foot properly rather than slipping like a mule. The Colony is the slip-on version, cut as a woven mule with an open back, and works better for wearing around the house, at the beach or for anything you want to step in and out of quickly.

Materials, fit and wear

Everything is vegan and cruelty-free, with woven vegan leather or suede uppers over cushioned EVA or crepe rubber soles. The weave gives the ventilation of an open sandal with more coverage, which makes them practical for warm weather without being a flip-flop. Malibu sandals run slightly small, so consider sizing up if you are between sizes or wear a wider fit. They suit summer travel, coastal days and general warm-weather wear rather than long walks over rough ground.
