Homework Candles & Home Fragrance

Homework is a London home fragrance studio founded in 2019 by designer Stephanie Hannington-Suen, drawing on Traditional Chinese Medicine and her family's practice. The range is built around the five TCM elements — Earth, Wood, Water, Metal and Fire — across candles, eau de parfum, essential oil blends and bath salts. Candles are hand-poured in the UK from a rapeseed and coconut wax blend, using natural ingredients and minimal packaging.

About Homework Candles & Home Fragrance

Homework was founded in London in 2019 by Stephanie Hannington-Suen, a graphic designer and art director who began making candles at home the previous January. The brand draws on her Chinese heritage and on Traditional Chinese Medicine: her grandmother's herbal remedies in Tai Po, and her parents' TCM clinic in Manchester. Products are made in small batches in an East London workshop.

The five elements

Each fragrance is named for one of the five elements in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and each is associated with a different mood and season. Water is cool and clean, opening with bergamot, neroli and petitgrain over Chinese cedar. Wood is green and resinous, built on pine, hinoki, cypress and oakmoss. Earth is grounding, with fir, rose and cardamom over musk and patchouli. Metal is sharper, using lime, bay leaf and pink pepper. Fire is the warmest, with orange, clove, amber and sandalwood.

Candles, oils and bath salts

Candles come in 180g and 280g sizes, hand-poured in the UK from a rapeseed and coconut wax blend, with the smaller size burning for around 35 to 40 hours. Essential oil blends work in a diffuser or a few drops in water, and use the same five element fragrances. Bath salts and eau de parfum extend the range beyond the home. Packaging is deliberately minimal and the glass jars are designed to be reused once the candle is finished.
