What size backpack do I need for everyday use?

For everyday carry, a 15–20 litre backpack is a good starting point. It usually fits a 13–15 inch laptop, charger, notebook, water bottle and essentials without feeling bulky. If you also carry gym kit or camera gear, 20–25L tends to be more comfortable.

What size rucksack is best for walking or day hikes?

A 20–30 litre rucksack suits most day walks. It gives space for spare layers, food and water, while staying manageable on the move. If you carry extra kit or head out in colder months, 30–35L can be a better fit.

How do I choose a travel backpack that works as carry-on?

Many travellers choose 25–40 litres for carry-on travel. Look for organised compartments, secure zips and a shape that is easy to stow. Airline size limits vary, so check your carrier’s rules before you fly, especially on budget routes.

Are backpacks waterproof or water-resistant?

Most backpacks are water-resistant, meaning they cope with showers but are not designed for full submersion. Waterproof packs use sealed construction and water-tight closures. If you need stronger protection, choose a more protective build or use a rain cover where the bag supports it.

How do I care for my backpack to extend its life?

Follow the maker’s care guidance. In most cases, empty the bag, brush off dirt and spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid machine washing unless the brand states it is safe. Let it air-dry fully before storage. Waxed-cotton or leather-trim bags may need occasional re-treatment.

What’s the difference between a backpack and a rucksack?

The terms are often used interchangeably. In UK usage, 'rucksack' frequently points to walking and hiking packs (often 30L+), while 'backpack' can mean everyday, travel or work bags. Many brands use the wording based on tradition rather than a strict definition.

About Backpacks & Rucksacks - Laptop, Travel & Walking Packs

Choosing a Backpack or Rucksack

Choosing the right backpack (or rucksack) comes down to capacity, comfort and how you plan to use it. Use the guide below to match the bag to your routine.

1. Daily use & commuting

For work and everyday carry, a 15–25L backpack is usually enough. Prioritise a padded laptop sleeve, quick-access pockets and fabrics that handle rain and public transport.

2. Travel & carry-on backpacks

For short breaks, a 25–40L travel backpack works well. Look for secure zips, organised interiors and grab handles. Always check airline size rules before flying, as limits vary by carrier.

3. Walking rucksacks & day hikes

For day walks, 20–30L is a useful range for spare layers, water and food. A supportive back panel, comfortable straps and practical external pockets make a noticeable difference over longer distances.

4. Longer days & heavier loads

If you regularly carry more gear, consider 30L and above. Compression straps, a stable carry and hardwearing fabrics help keep the load controlled and comfortable.

5. Materials & weather protection

Common materials include recycled polyester, robust nylon, waxed cotton and canvas. Many bags are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof; if you need stronger protection, look for sealed construction or use a rain cover where supported.

6. Filters & brand options

Use the filters to sort by capacity, brand, fabric and features. For focused selections, browse our Fjällräven backpacks or explore Patagonia backpacks and slings. You can also visit our journal for buying guides.
